I was very surprised to hear this week that according to the latest findings (Mercer’s 2011 Cost of Living Survey), Luanda, Angola, is the world’s most expensive city for expatriates. This comes as a surprise to me as Angola is a developing country. The very high cost of living is due to the fact that Angola imports most of its goods as its infrastructure has almost been totally destroyed during a very long civil war that lasted for 27 years. However, the majority of its population lives in poverty with less than 2 dollars a day.
