From Brazil

Berlin’s “Haus der Kuturen der Welt” kicked off the program “Première Brasil”, an exciting series of films curated by the director of the “Festival do Rio”, Ilda Santiago. Not only are these good films, but we also don’t get a chance to see films like these very often. Latin America is woefully underrepresented in German cinemas. We’re working on filling this gap.

Definitely worth watching tonight if you can get out is Favela on Blast, a documentary full of the beats and rhythms of Rio funk at the “Haus der Kulturen der Welt”. Hot stuff.

Favela on Blast

Director: Wesley Pentz/Leandro HBL

Brazil 2007, 80 min, original version with English subtitles

Baile funk (also known as Rio funk or favela funk) is as hot and heavy as Rio de Janeiro itself. It combines the bombastic rhythms of Miami bass with loops and samples of vibrant rhyming, rapped in Brazilian slang. DJ Diplo (Wesley Pentz) and Leandro HBL collected material over a two year time period and researched nearly 60 favelas throughout the country. Their documentary portrays the feverish and aggressive subculture of funk carioca.
