Experimental Panoramic Ball Camera – Toss it in the Air

All you camera freaks out there might like watching the video of the panoramic ball camera developed by researcher Jonas Pfeil and his team at the Technical University in Berlin.

The camera is a ball like any other ball, except that 36 fixed-focus 2 megapixel mobile phone camera modules have been inserted into the padding.

The camera also contains an accelerometer which measures the ball’s  launch acceleration. When the ball reaches it highest point, exposure is triggered and a full spherical panorama is generated at the zenith of the toss.  Once the ball comes back to earth, pictures can be watched in the ball’s own panoramic viewer.  As the team puts it “we found that it is a very enjoyable, playful way to take pictures.”
