51st Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution

51 years ago, on January 1, 1959, revolutionary forces under Fidel Castro conquered the Cuban capital Havana and effectively ended to the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. In the turbulent years that followed, Cuba became a beacon of hope through its egalitarian social gains and international solidarity. It was also plagued by ruthless treatment of dissenting voices and persistent intervention attempts by the USA. Even today, the US still upholds a trade embargo that seems obsolete, if it ever was necessary. But the Obama administration has also sent signals that are more hopeful…
