When the audience produces a film: Sandgrains

I am fascinated by the concept of “Crowdfunding”. From my modest point of view, there cannot be a more honest way of producing a film. It frees the filmmaker of economic interests and entertainment monopolies. The documentary SANDGRAINS, by Gabriel Manrique and Jordie Montevecchi, was financed through Crowdfunding. For those who still don’t know much about it, Crowdfunding is a financing model where anyone can donate money to sponsor any type of initiative. In this case, the filmmakers crowdsourced £10,000 to shoot their film.

Crowdfunding is based on the trust of a bunch of people who buy something before it actually exists. It is an empowering tool, a great collective cooperation with a single goal: to turn a project into reality, a project that otherwise would never see the light of day.

Inevitably, being at the cutting edge and spearheading a project with so many donors behind it creates enormous pressure for, in this case, the filmmakers. But it is also a great incentive to put everything you have into the effort to make your dream come true. On the other hand, there is more than just the pressure to succeed. There is also a large community of people who feel themselves to be part of the project, who feel connected to it – and to it’s success. This supports and promotes an endeavor in a very natural way.

The intention of the documentary SANDGRAINS could not be more in harmony with it’s whole evolution, for it is a film which denounces the environmental effects of global fishing. It’s success as a film is true thanks to the will and confidence of many different people who put their money into it.
