Unknown Pleasures – Filmfestival in Berlin

Whether you call them indie or arthouse, in recent years American films that veer from the traditional Hollywood patterns have had a tough time of it in German cinemas. So there´s all the more reason to attend Babylon’s second, hopefully annual, American Independent Film Fest. The line-up consists of 21 interesting, challenging, original productions, many of which are true premieres or are being shown in Germany for the first time. They include Greg Mottola’s Adventureland (Jan 5, 21:00, Jan 9, 22:00), a film that’s had it surprisingly difficult in cinemas, despite its hot young stars (Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart); the controversial and in many ways truly disturbing school/violence/drug-drama Afterschool (directed by Antonio Campos, Jan 2, 22:00, Jan 11, 21:00; photo); the comparatively mainstream Two Lovers (Jan 1, 19:30, Jan 12, 21:00, Jan 16, 22:00), which is directed by James Gray and stars the elusive Joaquin Phoenix; and the Jarmuschian The GoodTimesKid (Jan 6, 21:00, Jan 8, 22:00), an early film by Azazel Jacobs, whose Momma’s Man was a favorite at last year`s

Unknown Pleasures.
