Yesterday, I went to the movies and watched THE TREE OF LIFE by director Terrence Malick, the winner of this year’s Palme d’Or in Cannes. The main actors of the movie are Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn. I haven’t seen a very high number of films in my life, so I don’t know if my opinion is representative, but THE TREE OF LIFE is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen so far.

It tells the story of a Texan family who loses a son in the 1950’s. Starting from this story as a basis, the film asks questions about the origins of life and what happens after death. This is at least how I understand it. The film is hard to follow as it is composed of the story of this family while many flashbacks are taking place and random pictures of the universe and of nature are being showed. I thought that it was a good idea to show beautiful pictures of the universe forming as well as of the earth in order to ask about the origins of life but it went a bit too far for me when pictures of dinosaurs were being showed. These fantasy film like pictures are too far off subject and off the poetry of the rest of the pictures in the film.

So, all in all, this is a movie that I would recommend for its actors, not only the famous ones, but also for the child actors who play very well. The beautiful pictures of the universe and of nature are also worth seeing, but I wouldn’t go see this movie for its story that I find way too incoherent. The film lasts for 2 hours 20 min which is also too long in my opinion.
