From Behind the Veil: Tamer Yigit and Branka Prlic – “Die Nachthexe”

     |    Monday, der 5. July 2010

End of June in 2010 Tamer Yigit and Branka Prlic presented their 4th theater collaboration Die Nachthexe in Berlin’s HAU 3 theater.

The piece is about two 14 year old girls who live the in the Berlin inner-city district Neukölln. At realeyz.tv we also have a film that addresses this same theme: Damla = Tropfen | Derya = Ozean

From the “Die Nachthexe” press release :

“The two characters Zeynep and Esma, both 14, meet in a laundromat in Neukölln. In the unknown future a few years from now, these best friends will separate. It won’t be a slow distancing from each other, but an apocalyptic falling out”.

Maybe that’s what the piece really is about …

We do meet two 14 year old girls from Neukölln. And now everything comes crashing in. A baby is no longer inside its mother’s body, but has entered the world – just now, and hallelujah, what happens next?

It’s about being a mother, even if you’re the father. It’s about living in the city, the unbearable heaviness of being when the Berlin inner city is home. Noise, cars, black asphalt all around. It’s about being a migrant. About being a migrant child. About being migrant parents. What’s a cliché and what not? Where is home after all? Who is that clawing in the earth? Should I wear a veil or not? ‘Heidi, Heidi, the girl in the mountains’…

There’s a lot going on thematically, and it’s not easy to connect all these dots. But it’s a solid start. It’s also possible that some of the audience cried. The emotions aren’t just on the video screens that surround the stage and in the music played by Yigit and stage team. The emotions are also inside.

The piece was stages 3 times in HAU 3, but soon, you might be able to watch the piece here – on realeyz.tv!
