Best DJ of All Time?

     |    Wednesday, der 8. December 2010

The end of the year is approaching and what is this season’s favorite activity? Gift shopping? Drinking mulled wine? No – list making. Not just jotting down recipients of gifts and cards or New Year’s resolutions, mind you, but also self-reflection in the form of participation in year end polls. Best movie, most annoying pop singer, lamest excuse by the government for justifying represssive policy measure x…

Mixmag, the leading British publication for DJs and other aficionados of electronic dance music, is aiming to crown nothing less than the best DJ of all time through its readers’ poll. Helpfully, the editorial staff has compiled a short list:

2ManyDJs | Alfredo | Andrew Weatherall | Andy C | Carl Cox | David Mancuso | Derrick Carter | Eddie Halliwell | Erick Morillo | Erol Alkan | Fabio & Grooverider | Fatboy Slim | Felix Da Housecat | Francis Grasso | Francois Kevorkian | Frankie Knuckles | Grandmaster Flash | Hatcha | Jazzy Jeff | Jeff Mills | Jimmy Savile | Kool Herc | Larry Levan | Laurent Garnier | Marky | Optimo | Paul Oakenfold | Paul Van Dyk | Qbert | Ricardo Villalobos | Richie Hawtin | Sasha | Sven Vath | Tiesto | Tony De Vit

You can vote here until December 15. Discussion about the bias of the shortlist (djanes?, If broadcast personality Savile’s on the list, where’s John Peel?, underrepresentation of hip hop, overrepresentation of the U.S. and the U.K….) is welcomed.

Ricardo Villalobos talks about his use of analogue synthesizers in TOTALLY WIRED.

Paul Oakenfold (as well as many other star DJs not shortlisted) is interviewed in PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD.
