Berlin Diary

This haunting piece at Görlitzer Bahnhof is seen by hundreds of people a day. I first noticed it on Monday morning. It is impossible to miss. As you walk up the steps to reach the subway platforms, you are confronted by this young child crouching close to the ground, arms wrapped about his small body, protecting himself.  More direct and poignant than all the news on the radio and TV.

The artist managed to capture something ineffable here. The child appears both abandoned yet hopeful, looking up in expectation. Perhaps he is looking up to a parent or older sibling. Perhaps he is looking into the future. Perhaps this child is our future.
